He was one of the country's biggest pop stars in his hey-day, before committing a series of sex crimes against children both in the UK and overseas and, on Tuesday night,. Gary Glitter will be the subject of an ITV documentary about his horrifying actions.

Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, achieved huge chart success in the the 1970s and 80s, thanks to songs like I'm The Leader of The Gang, Hello, Hello I'm Back Again and festive single Rock and Roll Christmas. At the height of his fame, Glitter scored 12 top 10 hits and sold over 20 million records, however, he suffered a huge fall from grace he was arrested in 1997 and convicted and imprisoned in 1999 for downloading thousands of child pornography images and videos

He was then deported from Cambodia on suspected child sexual abuse charges in 2002 and settled in Vietnam, where a court found him guilty of obscene acts with minors in 2006. Having served his sentence over there, Glitter ended up back in UK, being placed on the Sex Offenders register for life, before then being arrested as part of Operation Yewtree in 2012.

The disgraced musician was released on bail, and was charged in 2014 with historical child sex offences, being found guilty of one count of attempted rape, one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and four counts of indecent assault in 2015 and being sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Where is Gary Glitter now?

Glitter, now 79, was released on licence in February 2023, after serving just half of his sentence, but then ended up behind bars again just a month later, having breached his conditions.

In February 2024 he was denied parole and ITV's The Popstar Peadophile will look at the vile crimes he committed and the repeated failures to bring him to justice, using historical victim testimony, archive footage and interviews with those who met him and the lawyers involved in both the prosecution and defence of Gary Glitter during various different trials
