These stirring photographs offer an incredible look at life in the armed forces

Corporal Tim Jones has triumphed at the Army Photographic Competition 2016, taking the Photographer of the Year Crown for his portfolio of images that show a fascinating side of life in the forces.

His victory was announced today at a ceremony held at the Imperial War Museum, where his images were displayed.

Among the most striking images from Tim’s portfolio is a shot of a Fijian soldier wading through treacherous deep water in the jungles of Brunei.

Discussing the shot, Tim revealed: ‘We were in Brunei to capture the unit training in jungle warfare and I thought we should set this scene in the water. We found a little stream and the unit were more than happy to do it. It’s my personal favourite.’

Scotland-based photographer Mark Owens was honoured for his picture ‘The Hug’, which was voted the best picture by members of the public on Instagram and Facebook.
