Whitney Houston's legacy five years after her death

Whitney Houston was found submerged in a bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hotel the night before the Grammys five years ago today.

She was just 48-years-old.

It turned out that the superstar died following a massive heart attack, caused by years of cocaine abuse that finally took their toll on her body.

Music fans were just getting over the death of Amy Winehouse the year before, and Michael Jackson two years before that (in 2009), and though it felt somewhat inevitable given her lifestyle, the news sent shock waves around the world.

Few have topped Whitney in terms of talent, adoration and record sales. Her rendition of Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XXV in Tampa in 1991 is generally accepted as the best ever.

Fans of the star hoped that in death, Whitney would be remembered for her incredible voice and that the tragic elements of her life would become a mere side note in her story.

However, that was not to be. Tragedy followed Whitney to the grave when her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was also found unconcious in the bath at her Georgia home and spent six months in a coma before she passed away.

Bobbi Kristina was just 22 years old and an aspiring actress when she died in hospital surrounded by family on July 26, 2015.

A photo of the young woman lying in her casket was leaked to the press and the bickering between Whitney’s ex-husband Bobby Brown’s family and hers over their daughter’s funeral was never far from the headlines.

Nor was the accusations that Bobbi’s fiancé, Nick Gordon, was responsible for her death.

It was alleged Bobbi died due to a violent altercation with Nick, “after which he placed her in a bathtub, unconscious, after he injected her with a toxic mixture.”

However, Nick insisted Bobby’s death was her own fault, tellng The Sun on Sunday the following year: “What happened to Krissy was Krissy’s own doing, sad as it is.”

He said: “Krissy suffered anxiety attacks. We became terrified of the bath, I didn’t even like deep water.

“She would drink wine bottle after bottle. She’d drink to blot out the pain and it always got worse near the anniversary of Whitney’s death and her birthday in August.”

Then, in September last year, Nick was later found responsible for her death and ordered to pay damages to her estate, including $15 million for present value of life, $13.8 million for pain and suffering as a result of assault, $250,000 in punitive damages, $1.37 million for assault and battery and $1.575 million for money taken from an account.

Elsewhere since Whitney’s death, her ex-husband Bobby Brown became a father for the seventh time with his wife Alicia Etheredge.

Bobby was married to Whitney from 1992 until 2007, when the superstar singer filed for divorce and received custody of Bobbi when she was 14 years old. She sadly passed nearly a year to the day his latest daughter was born.

Confirming the news on his Instagram account, he wrote: “Just had a baby girl 10 pounds”

The 47-year-old star and Alicia also have 12-month-old daughter Bodhi and son Cassius, seven.

The ‘Candy Girl’ hitmaker also has children Landon, 27, La’Princia, 26 and Bobby Jr., 23, from previous relationships.

Another man in Whitney’s life, Ray J entered the ‘Celebrity Big Brother UK’ house.

TV bosses hoped he would discuss his relationship with the fallen star but he remained tight lipped on their reported romance and insisted they were just “good friends”.
