Why Did 300 Reindeer Suddenly Drop Dead In Norway?

More than 300 wild reindeer were found lying dead in Norway this week.

The mass expiration seems to have been the result of a lightning strike after heavy storms battered the Hardangervidda region of the country.

The deer’s bodies showed signs of charring, which could be caused by a strike, with authorities speculating that so many animals died because they were standing close together.

At least 323 reindeer were found dead at the gruesome scene, including 70 calves.

A further five were put down as a result of their injuries.

The Norwegian Environment Agency has launched an investigation into the freak event.

Knut Nylend, a spokesman for the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate said: “There was an especially heavy thunderstorm in the afternoon. The herd was probably struck dead by the lightning.

"This is very special. I’ve heard of cattle being killed by lightning, but not in such huge volumes.”
