Why Liverpool and Arne Slot could wait two weeks before confirming first transfer

Liverpool may have to wait a bit longer before they can officially complete any new signings.

The summer transfer window opened on Friday, allowing the Reds to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign. Arne Slot is the new head coach at Anfield and will be tasked with ensuring a successful season in the Premier League and across all competitions.

Even before the summer window opened, Liverpool were being credited with an interest in several potential new signings. It remains to be seen what areas of the squad Slot and new sporting director Richard Hughes will look to target this summer, with centre-back, midfield and forward all roles that could see reinforcements.

But despite the summer transfer window being open, Liverpool may still be forced to wait to announce any new deals. This could be due to the club wanting to ensure they comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR).

June 30 marks the final day of the accounting period for Liverpool and other Premier League and English clubs. It's also the final day that player and manager contracts typically expire, with July 1 often the first day that a player or manager will be employed by their new clubs.

It was different in Liverpool's case for Slot, who officially began his role as the club's head coach on June 1. In the case of players leaving the club, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will see their contracts expire on June 30, and will officially become free agents a day later.

Rumours and speculation surrounding Liverpool's potential transfer business are likely to ramp up now the window is officially open. It remains to be seen when the Reds will actually announce their first deal, but it's likely that Slot, Hughes and Co. will be hard at work trying to bring new signings to Anfield ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
