Manchester United may still have to wait before they can announce their first signing of the summer.

Friday marks the first day that the summer transfer window is open for Premier League clubs. United are now officially able to agree deals for new players to move to Old Trafford ahead of next season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos Group assumed control of footballing operations at United at the start of the season. Since then, Ratcliffe and Co. have been gradually implementing a new system at Old Trafford that will take responsibility for their first summer transfer window in the coming weeks.

Despite United being officially able to agree deals for new signings, the club may be forced to wait to give the green light on deals. This is because the club potentially ensures that they comply with financial rules.

June 30 typically marks the final day that players are contracted to clubs. This applies to Anthony Martial, who will leave United this summer as a free agent when his deal with the club expires.

This date is also the final day of the accounting year for English clubs. United may have to delay the confirmation of new signings until July 1, depending on where the club stands with their compliance with Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR).

It remains to be seen what players United will target during the summer transfer window. Centre-back is known to be an area of the squad that the Reds will look to bring in reinforcements, with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba known to be targets.

United already have more certainty heading into the summer window after news emerged regarding Erik ten Hag's future. Ten Hag will remain in the Old Trafford dugout as United manager heading into next season after Ratcliffe and Ineos completed their post-season review of the club.
