Stressed-out women are getting massages to ease tension. So far, so normal. Until you realise we’re not talking back and shoulder massages here. Nope. The latest way for women to cope with the pressures of a busy life is to book themselves in for a ‘vagina massage’.

If you’re currently imagining the sort of intimate massage you might get in a back street ‘sauna’ offering happy endings as standard. Stop. Right. There. As there’s nothing remotely dodgy about this particular practice. Known as a ‘yoni massage’ this treatment is all about releasing tension and being comfortable with touch. The massage includes touching, deep breathing, and potentially (if consent is given) finger penetration by the masseuse.

Though the main reason women book a professional vagina massage is to discover what makes them feel good, apparently there has been a rise in the number of women seeking treatment for alternative reasons, such as coping with a trauma or a breakup.

Isis Phoenix, a somatic sexologist who specialises in yoni massage, spoke to Women’s Health about the practice and explained that it is possible to release emotions that may be “stuck” in your vagina by experiencing different sensations during the massage.

“A yoni massage is a ceremony where a woman is invited to seize touch on her vulva. When we invite touch, there’s opportunity to cleanse a sense of energy…The biggest benefit is that they feel a sense of embodied wisdom of what gives them pleasure,” she said.

Some experts are definitely on board with the benefits a yoni massage can have on your sex life.

“Logically, anything that increases blood flow to the pelvis increases sensitivity, arousal, and lubrication, which could help with orgasms,” Mary Jane Minkin, M.D. clinical professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Yale School of Medicine explained to Women’s Health.

But Minkin is a little more skeptical about the claims that this particular type of massage can lead to a release of tension. “To say that just touching the vagina can lead to a release of emotions doesn’t seem true to me,” she says. But if it improves your sex life, that can better your relationship and, in turn, lead to a little emotional stress relief, she explains.

Fancy giving it a go? A session could set you back around £200, and you’ll definitely want to book somewhere reputable.
