ITV's new Kate Beckinsale-led drama The Widow continued to rack up its body count in tonight's episode (April 22), killing off not one but two characters in decisively gruesome scenes.

Judith Gray (Doctor Who's Alex Kingston) and Pieter Biello (Bart Fouche) both met their untimely demises in the episode, the former being brutally stabbed to death by General Azikiwe (Babs Olusanmokun) and Beckinsale's Georgia gunning down the latter.

After interrogating Pieter to gain more information about her missing husband, Georgia soon realised that he was of no real use to her and ended up shooting him dead as he tried to chase her down.

Meanwhile, after it was revealed that she had a link to the mysterious plane crash, Judith was violently knifed to death on the floor by General Azikiwe.

Viewers were naturally shocked by the horrifying scenes, but equally struggled to follow the episode's storyline as it flicked between the present day and flashbacks.

One confused fan tweeted: "Is this scene before or after she passed away? There's been so much confusion, I'm not quite sure anymore."

While another wrote: "Was really enjoying @ITV The widow but no not anymore. Really disappointed. It’s far too confusing now. Good characters are getting killed. Such a shame."

It's not the first time viewers have been left clueless by the use of flashbacks in the new series, either. In an episode last week, those watching at home were completely baffled by the appearance of an unidentified baby.

The Widow continues tomorrow night (April 23) at 9pm on ITV.
