"Oh this? I grabbed it from a little thrift store in Silver Lake," laughs Willem Dafoe, gallantly shrugging off the compliment you've just paid him. "I had a dinner with a director and I only had an old Dead Kennedys T-shirt, so it was the first thing I saw. Honestly, it was pretty cheap."

He doesn't say who the director is, because Uncle Will just isn't like that. But you do know it's someone comically famous. And you also know that your father is bristling once again at the stupendous life and clothes of his elder brother as you congregate for a frankly alarming amount of candles on grandma's birthday cake.

She doesn't even realise any of this is happening, bless her. That's because it never did. But, on the campaign trail of his latest flick Siberia at the 70th Berlinale Film Festival, Dafoe scored the role of his life in a top level look.

First, to the knit. One part Bode, two parts kids TV presenter, a mixed stripe is one way to rejig the usual format, and colour is used purposefully but sparingly too. Second, Dafoe knows what he's doing. So where the sweater sings, monochrome elsewhere provides backing vocals for a well-balanced hymn sheet.

But most importantly, Dafoe is enjoying himself. Just look. He's pulling silly faces and making everybody laugh and he's even got a handlebar moustache that sits on the right side of Seventies tribute. It's a breath of fresh air following the acrid enigma of The Lighthouse, and with Siberia set to tell the merry tale of nuclear radiation and the survivors who've suffered it, you can expect a similar flick of absolute, unrelenting hopelessness.

It's a career on the eternal ascendance, though. The same can be said for the wardrobe. And yes, your dad is still absolutely fuming about it.
