"Some brand names evoke nostalgia while staying stylishly and current by being labelled as 'retro'. One such item is a certain pink wine that enjoyed immense popularity in the 70s and was a staple at every 80s dinner party.

The enduringly popular Mateus Rosé has shed its tacky past and once again become a sought-after choice for savvy sippers. Celebrity wine expert Tom Gibley recently shared a glowing review of the wine with his 100,000-plus followers on TikTok, celebrating its resurgence and super sweet taste.

Starting his video with the unusual line "my granny used to mainline this stuff," the enthusiastic wine lover doesn't shy away from its somewhat questionable reputation. Yet, to his surprise and ours too, it turns out, he's a fan!

Grabbing the iconic curved bottle from a mocked-up 'Granny's knicker drawer' the plonk master tells his audience that Mateus wine is made by Portugal's biggest Rosé brand, which makes over 20 million bottles, selling one bottle every 38 minutes.

Stopping short of judging it before taking a sip, he says "I won't call it p**s cos I haven't tried it yet."

Describing the legendary brightly coloured tipple, Tom says "It has a little bit of spritz, but the first thing is that it's electric pink - not coral pink, not salmon pink - that's electric pink."

Taking a sizeable swig from a posh-looking wine glass, he describes the taste as giving "a bit of strawberry, very sweet, very ripe, it's tutti frutti bubblegum."

Delighted by the taste, the wine expert continues "And I'm not spitting it out! Its absolutely bloody joyous! It's got loads of residual sugar, quite a bit of freshness and a bit of spritz."

Naming it his "breakfast rose" Tom kisses the glass and concludes his review by saying "Mateus - you and I haven't been on a date together for about 15 years, but I feel one coming on."
