Woman dies following medical emergency at Smith County Jail

SMITH COUTY, Texas (KETK) – The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said a female inmate died on Sunday morning.

According to a release, Tonya Williams, an inmate at the Smith County Jail, was in a medical emergency around 6 a.m. Officials said resuscitation efforts were given and Williams was taken to a local hospital where she “succumbed to her medical emergency.”

The sheriff’s office said Texas Rangers were notified to conduct an investigation, per normal protocol, and an autopsy was ordered.

Williams was arrested on Thursday on drug related charges, a release said.
