Woman falls off California’s tallest bridge while trying to take a SELFIE

A woman has miraculously survived after she fell off the tallest bridge in California while attempting to take a selfie.

The unidentified female plunged 60ft off the Foresthill Bridge near Sacramento on Tuesday.

Police say she was walking along the catwalk underneath the 730ft bridge, which is the highest in California and one of the highest in the whole of the United States.

The woman was airlifted to hospital after being knocked unconscious but she somehow managed to survive the fall.

Paul Goncharuk, a friend of the woman, told KOVR that “she was knocked unconscious, suffered a deep gash to her arm and fractured bones that will require surgery”.

He added: “They were taking a picture on the bridge, and then the big bolts that are holding the beams together, she stepped on them kind of weirdly and lost balance and fell backwards.”

Placer County’s sheriff’s office said: “This young lady is very lucky to be alive and the consequences could have been worse for her, her friends and her family.”

The catwalk beneath the bridge is a popular haunt for selfie chasers, with pictures and videos of the spot shared across social media.

However, police have begun patrolling the area and anyone trespassing will be arrested.

Mr Goncharuk added: ”It’s a cool place to take pictures, but obviously not worth the risk.”
