A young woman has spoken of the perils of taking crystal meth, after she gouged her eyes out while high.

Kaylee Muthart, from Anderson, South Carolina was rushed to hospital last month after she gouged her eyes out in front of a church, believing her actions were a sacrifice to God.

Despite now facing blindness for the rest of her life, Muthart now says that ‘life is more beautiful’ because she has kicked her drug addiction.

The horrific ordeal occurred on February 6, only days after Muthart had promised her mother she would attend rehab.

But only a week before she was supposed to leave for the centre, she bought a huge dose of crystallised amphetamine from her drug dealer.

The following morning, she believed that everyone would die if she didn’t tear out her eyes immediately.

As passers-by attempted to save Muthart’s life, she reportedly attempted to resist their efforts and screamed ‘I want to see the light’.

Describing the moment she woke up in hospital, Muthart told Cosmopolitan: ‘Everything was dark, and I knew I was blind, but when I sensed my mom by my side, I knew I would be okay.’

Muthart has now returned home and is attending psychiatric treatment as well as physical therapy. She plans to become a marine biologist in the future.

She has also established a GoFundMe page to raise money for a guide dog, where she has so far secured $40,000 of a $50,000 target.

‘Life’s more beautiful now, life’s more beautiful than it was being on drugs. It is a horrible world to live in’, she added.
