With Wonder Woman proving a bigger critical and commercial success than anyone predicted, it's no surprise that all eyes quickly turned to the potential for a sequel.

Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder confirmed plans for Wonder Woman 2 even before Patty Jenkins's first film hit our screens. Here's everything we know about the DC Extended Universe movie, from Jenkins and Gal Gadot's return to a major time jump between films.

Come back regularly, as we'll be updating this article with new information as it's available.

Although rumour had it that Warners was holding back on major DCEU announcements until it saw how Justice League performs in the autumn, we now have a confirmed Wonder Woman 1984 release date.

Originally announced for December 13, 2019, the film is now coming more than a month earlier on November 1, 2019.

Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, is of course signed up for the next film. And she's back in her warrior costume for Wonder Woman 1984.

Former Game of Thrones and Narcos star Pedro Pascal also has a top-secret role in the movie but a sneak peek at his character (released on Twitter by Jenkins) may have revealed who he is playing.

Fans think the teaser image suggests he may be DC Comics villain Maxwell Lord - a ruthless industrialist who uses his vast fortune to amass influence and power.

Jenkins has also confirmed on Twitter that Kristen Wiig will play the film's villain, The Cheetah.

The mortal cast members from the first movie will all be dead from old age in the present day, so we've probably seen the last of Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and Eugene Brave Rock.

There was a rumour that Chris Pine's Steve Trevor would be returning, and Jenkins has since confirmed that this is true!

There are several obstacles to Pine's return, the biggest being that he's dead. Flashback? Time travel? Some kind of resurrection storyline? Or have they gone the way of the Wonder Woman TV show, and Pine is actually playing Steve Trevor Jr, the son of Steve Trevor? Who can say at this point.

However, Connie Nielsen was back as Queen Hippolyta for Justice League, so there's every chance she'll return for Wonder Woman 1984. Sadly, Robin Wright's Justice League role turned out to just be a flashback to the dead General Antiope, so don't expect a resurrection for her.

But don't be too sad as we will see Hippolyta and Antiope in a flashback sequence in the sequel as it's been confirmed that Wright was filming on the Spanish set.

Diana has a load of Justice League friends like Ben Affleck's Batman, Henry Cavill's Superman and Ezra Miller's Flash just ripe for cameos too.

Classic TV Wonder Woman Lynda Carter is totally up for appearing in the new film after they didn't manage to fit her into the first. Just saying, Warner Bros.

Back in April, Gadot touchingly honoured the original Wonder Woman's Lynda Carter, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Emma Thompson would totally be up for it too, incidentally.

Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon, HBO's Insecure), Soundarya Sharma (Ranchi Diaries), Ravi Patel (Meet the Patels, Wrecked) and Gabriella Wilde (Carrie, The Three Musketeers) have also been cast in mystery roles.

Wonder Woman 1984 plot: What's happening?

Prepare yourself for a leap across time between the first and second movies. Wonder Woman was set in 1918 at the end of World War I, whereas the sequel looks like it's going to be set in the '80s and follow a Cold War narrative.

Former DCEU creative chief Geoff Johns shared the first official teaser for Wonder Woman 1984, and it contained the logo "WW84", confirming the sequel's '80s setting.

Initially it looked like we would find Diana in the modern day – which would put her in a post-Justice League world. The '80s setting now suggests she'll be granted a second true standalone movie before she even encounters the likes of Batman and Superman.

We also know where Jenkins wants it set. Diana was based in the Louvre in Wonder Woman, but the director has her eye on the home of superheroes – the United States.

"The story will take place in the US, which I think is right," Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. "She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America. It's time."

As for the villain, Wonder Woman is going up against her classic foe, Cheetah. The Cheetah is British archaeologist Dr Barbara Ann Minerva, who is cursed to transform into a cheetah woman who hungers for human flesh. She is sometimes portrayed as an old friend of Diana's who struggles against her unfortunate bloodlust.

And Wonder Woman's legendary invisible jet might even make an – ahem – appearance too.

Wonder Woman 1984 director: Patty Jenkins is back!

Patty Jenkins was teasing her plans for the sequel before she had officially signed on, but after some back and forth, she officially signed on to the sequel. Superman: The Movie director Richard Donner has even passed her the baton.

She's working on the script with veteran DC Comics writer Geoff Johns and The Expendables' David Callaham.

Wonder Woman 1984 soundtrack: Who's composing it?

Hans Zimmer has confirmed he is returning to the world of superheroes once more to score Wonder Woman 1984.

Zimmer had said he wouldn't write another superhero score after writing the one for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nearly broke his brain. It seems he felt like he was betraying Christian Bale's Batman by scoring the character for Batfleck.
