Workman dies after wall collapses at Manchester home

A man has died after a wall collapsed on him at a private renovation in Manchester.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the "workplace accident" on Saturday after a man was believed to have been crushed by a falling wall.

Police, fire and ambulance services all attended the scene in Fallowfield in Greater Manchester at around 2.50pm.

Attempts were made to save the man, who was aged in his 40s, but he died at the scene.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to "reports of concerns for the welfare of a man" at an address.

He added: "It was established that a man in his 40s was involved in a workplace accident and despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing at this stage."

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive confirmed to Yahoo News UK it had been made aware of the incident and said the body was "liaising with police and making initial enquiries into the circumstances".

It is believed the man was working on the renovation of a private house in Lloyd Street in the suburb at the time. If malpractice is suspected the HSE will launch an official investigation.

What is the Health and Safety Executive?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain's national regulator for workplace health and safety. It aims to reduce work-related death, injury and ill health.

The HSE is notified whenever an accident happens in a UK workplace. It has the power to enter a premises, the power to examine and investigate, and the power to stop work from continuing.

If breaches in health and safety law are found to have occurred, the HSE can issue a prohibition notice, withdraw licences or approvals until regulations are met, or prosecute companies where it is suspected the law has been broken.

The HSE is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions.
