What is World Car Free Day 2018? What road closures will there be in London? What you need to know
Motorists are being urged to ditch their vehicles for World Car Free Day on Saturday, which will see the closure of more than 80 roads across London.
Roads from Ealing to Hackney will become "play streets" throughout the day with Londoners being encouraged to take up greener forms of transport.
Councils across the capital have signed up to the initiative and overall more than 80 roads will be closed.
World Car Free Day comes as Sadiq Khan and Transport for London continue with efforts to make the capital’s communities greener, healthier and more attractive places.
Poor air quality is estimated to contribute to more than 40,000 premature deaths across the country annually and emissions from cars and vans is estimated to cost £6 billion each year.
What are 'play streets'?
Saturday's car-free day in the capital is being run by charity London Play, with support from both the Mayor of London Mr Khan and TfL.
The charity has been working to transform roads into safe places for children since 2008 with "play streets", which regularly shut to traffic for a few hours each week or month.
More than 80 streets in London are set to become "play streets" for the day on Saturday so the roads can be opened up to the community.
Fiona Sutherland, deputy director at London Play, said: “Streets make up 80 per cent of London’s public space, a valuable community resource which has largely been given up for the sole use of cars, parked or moving.
"Play streets are a simple concept giving local residents the opportunity to temporarily reclaim that space to come together informally with their neighbours, get active, build friendships and stronger communities as a result.
"We hope Car Free Day will inspire more people to start regular play sessions on their streets.”
Which roads will be closed for World Car Free Day?

'Clean up the capital’s dangerously polluted air'
Air pollution in London reportedly contributes to the early death of almost 9,500 Londoners each year, with car emissions being the main contributing factor.
The Mayor and TfL hope that World Car Free Day will encourage more Londoners to walk and cycle instead of using their cars.
Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “I’m delighted that Londoners will be able to enjoy more than 40 streets without traffic noise and exhaust fumes on World Car Free Day.
"Our support for London Play will transform neighbourhoods for families and offer a valuable opportunity to inspire long-term change, helping build on our work to reduce reliance on cars and clean up the capital’s dangerously polluted air."
Christina Calderato, Head of Delivery Planning at Transport for London, added: “We’re really pleased to be working with London Play and the boroughs to transform residential streets into traffic free zones.
"We hope that in doing so, people will start to view streets as valuable public spaces, where you can also meet, play, walk and cycle. By creating Healthy Streets, we aim to improve the quality of life for everyone in London.”
