Mackenzie Crooke's upcoming reboot of classic show Worzel Gummidge has got some exciting new cast members on board.

The project, which the BBC has announced will be aired this Christmas, will focus on the lovable scarecrow central character played by Crooke.

And more actors involved in the reboot have been announced, with Monty Python legend Michael Palin set to play The Green Man, creator of the scarecrows.

"It's a lovely part for me, but the whole script is very memorable and touching, and very funny," Palin said. "It quite skillfully weaves in something for everybody all the time."

Zoe Wanamaker, AKA Madame Hooch in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Cassandra in Doctor Who, will be playing eccentric local aristocrat Lady Bloomsbury Barton in the second episode.

"The whole thing is so charming and inventive," she said. "It's the sort of thing I'd watch. I'm sure it will be a huge success."

Also announced is Gentleman Jack's Rosie Cavaliero, who will be playing Mrs Braithwaite.

The new version will comprise two hour-long films called 'The Scarecrow of Scatterbrook' and 'The Green Man'.

The former will see two young strangers arrive at the village of Scatterbrook, where they discover Worzel, while the latter film will see the titular Green Man – who created scarecrows – arrive, unhappy to discover that Worzel is consorting with humans.
