The X-Files is bringing back the next gen Mulder and Scully to help save the world.

Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell have signed on to reprise their season 10 roles as young FBI team Einstein and Miller for the upcoming miniseries, reports TVLine.

Sceptic Einstein and true believer Miller were mirror images of Mulder and Scully, only 25 years younger, when they appeared in the controversial suicide bomber episode 'Babylon' and the season 10 finale 'My Struggle II'.

Last we saw them, Einstein and Miller were trying to distribute a cure for the alien virus that was spreading throughout humanity, just as the colonists launched their invasion.

There was initially speculation that series creator Chris Carter was using their appearances as a test run for an X-Files reboot based around them, but that never came to pass.

Carter will be bringing back plenty of familiar faces for the new season, including Annabeth Gish as Agent Reyes, the devious Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis) and potentially even the Lone Gunmen.

At last week's TCA press tour, Fox entertainment chairman David Madden said that season 11 will mostly shelve the overarching alien mythology in order to focus on standalone Monster-of-the-Week stories.

However, Madden also teased: "We start the season right up from where the season finale left off with that big helicopter and takes you right from there. You'll be launched into a very urgent adventure that has a lot to do with William - Mulder and Scully's kid.

"So, the search for William will be a significant thread through the show. You will see the Cigarette Smoking Man. You may see The Lone Gunmen somewhere along the line. There will be other characters from the previous mythology that will be reprised."

The X-Files will return to Fox in the US early next year.
