Mulder and Scully will have at least one person they can trust when The X-Files returns.

As Fox is readying production on the follow-up to 2016's revival miniseries, Deadline reports that long-time cast member Mitch Pileggi has officially signed up to reprise his role as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner.

Pileggi was a mainstay of the original X-Files, and was a key cast member in both movies, the Fox TV reunion season and a just-released series of audio plays too.

Skinner remains one of the only genuine allies that Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) can count on to have their backs when monsters or alien colonists close in on them.

The returning favourites aren't restricted to the cast. Chris Carter has assembled a very familiar writing staff for the new X-Files, made up of Glen Morgan and James Wong ('Squeeze') and Darin Morgan ('Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose'), plus former writers' assistants Brad Follmer, Gabe Rotter and Benjamin Van Allen.

Unfortunately, there were no female writers hired this season - an obvious shortcoming that was criticised even by The X-Files star Gillian Anderson.

Fox officially ordered ten more episodes during the Upfronts back in May. However, season 11 won't actually be premiering until at least the mid-season in 2018.

When the show does return, fans will surely be hoping for some resolution to the alien invasion of earth that started in season 10's finale 'My Struggle II'. But who are we kidding expecting answers - this is the X-Files we're talking about here!
