The X-Files fans are buzzing over the news that Academy Award-nominated Hollywood legend Barbara Hershey is joining the series.

Once Upon a Time veteran Hershey has been cast in the 11th season as Erika Price, a power-player from an unnamed shady organisation (via Deadline).

Such a cryptic character description brings to mind questions of whether she may be the revival's equivalent of Deep Throat or X as a mysterious insider who covertly aids Mulder and Scully in their investigations.

Of course, Erika Price is just as likely to have more malevolent intentions. Maybe she's aligned with the Cigarette Smoking Man or perhaps is a member of the alien collaborationist faction the Syndicate?

We'll have to wait until early next year to find out, but there's one thing for sure: The X-Files wouldn't cast an actress of Barbara Hershey's stature for a throwaway role.

Hershey is the first major new character to be confirmed for season 11, with previous announcements confirming the return of familiar faces like A.D. Skinner, Agent Reyes and the young FBI team of Einstein and Miller.

Unlike last year, eight of ten episodes in the new season will be standalone Monster-of-the-Week style adventures - but there will still be tie-ins with the overarching alien mythology.

Fox entertainment president David Madden told reporters at last week's TCA press tour that the premiere will pick "right up from where the season finale left off", as the alien colonists invaded.

"You'll be launched into a very urgent adventure that has a lot to do with William - Mulder and Scully's kid," he revealed.

"So, the search for William will be a significant thread through the show. You will see the Cigarette Smoking Man. You may see The Lone Gunmen somewhere along the line. There will be other characters from the previous mythology that will be reprised."

The X-Files will return to Fox in the US early next year.
