A 22-year-old man has been arrested over the murder of US rapper XXXTentacion.

Dedrick Devonshay Williams, 22, of Pompano Beach was arrested shortly before 7pm on Wednesday, the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Mr Williams has been charged with first-degree murder without premeditation. He is being held without bond in the Broward County Jail.

XXXTentacion, real name Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was gunned down on Monday as he left a motorcycle dealership near Fort Lauderdale where he was planning to make a purchase.

Authorities said the rapper was ambushed by two suspects. The rapper's attorney, David Bogenschutz, said that that investigators had told him XXXTentacion had visited a bank shortly before the shooting and possibly withdrew cash to buy a motorcycle at Riva Motorsports in Deerfield Beach.

Two men fled the scene in a dark SUV after one of them opened fire during a possible robbery attempt, investigators have said. It is not clear whether police are looking for any other suspects in the killing.

The death of the 20-year-old rapper stunned the hip hop community and sparked tributes online.

XXXTentacion, who was born and raised in Plantation, Florida, released his debut album in August 2017. His second album "?" debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 album chart when it was released in March.

According to local media reports, he had spent time in jail and was awaiting trial on allegations of domestic violence.

The suspect, Mr Williams has also been charged with a probation violation for theft of a car motor vehicle and driving without a valid license.
