Yankees hit many home runs, set many records

It wasn’t so long ago that the New York Yankees were in a tailspin. In a season with sky-high expectations, the Yankees had fallen as low as .500 last week after a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

How things have changed.

Against the same Blue Jays on Thursday, the Yankees finished up a series sweep that will be remembered for home runs, more home runs and, oh boy, so many home runs. The worst of the barrage came in the fourth inning of the 10-7 win.

Yankees hit ludicrous amount of home runs

First, Brett Gardner took Chase Anderson deep to put the Yankees up 5-2. Then, DJ LeMahieu took the next pitch deep to the opposite field for another homer. Then, Luke Voit hit the very next pitch over the Yankees’ bullpen for his MLB-leading 20th homer of the year.

Anderson, to his credit, then struck out Aaron Hicks on three pitches. And then he gave up back-to-back homers to Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres. Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, perhaps sensing this wasn’t Anderson’s night, mercifully pulled the right-hander after the inning’s fifth home run.

No more Yankees would homer that inning, but that was all it took for the team to set a franchise record for homers in an inning and tie the all-time MLB mark. The last team to hit five homers in an inning: the 2017 Washington Nationals.

Gary Sanchez would add to the total in the seventh inning with his own homer, giving the Yankees a third straight night with at least six homers, another MLB record. In total, the Yankees posted 19 homers in their three-game series against the Blue Jays, an MLB record for any span of three games.

As a team, the Yankees outscored the Blue Jays 43-15 in the series. In their current eight-game win streak, they have hit more homers (27) than their opponents have scored runs (19).

The Yankees currently lead the American League in homers with 88 on the season and rank second in MLB, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 95. Entering the Blue Jays series, they were ranked seventh.

This onslaught seems set to continue as well. New York’s next series opponent is the Boston Red Sox, who have allowed the most homers in the American League this season. Have fun with that, Boston.
