Yankuba Minteh £40m transfer talks under way with Roma, Marseille and Dortmund keen

Yankuba Minteh has accepted that his time at Newcastle United could over before it has even started - but will only leave if his next project is a good one.

The Gambia international was understood to be surprised at Newcastle's decision to sell him at first but knows that his next move will be a crucial one for his career. Minteh was signed only 12 months ago from Odense for just £7million but Newcastle are now open to offers around the £40m mark after a successful loan stint at Feyenoord.

AS Roma are the latest club to be linked with Minteh in Italy but there is also reported interest from Marseille and Borussia Dortmund have already been credited with an enquiry in the summer window. Whether Arne Slot, who had the winger at Feyenoord with him last season, is prepared to take him to Liverpool remains to be seen.

For now Chronicle Live understands that talks between Newcastle, Minteh's representatives and the clutch of European clubs keen on his signature are ongoing. As things stand, Minteh is one of the favourites to be sold before the June 30 PSR health check deadline.

His sale would be classed as a hasty one by some supporters but by the same token, Newcastle know they have to move players on in order to avoid any potential point deductions from PSR rules and the Magpies are keen to avoid the same type of punishment that Everton and Nottingham Forest suffered last year.

Speaking on Minteh's excellent progress last season, after he scored 10 goals in 17 starts for the Rotterdam team in the Dutch League, Newcastle's loan manager Shola Ameobi told Chronicle Live earlier this summer: "Yankuba Minteh done amazingly this year.

"I think the vision for him was to see if he could play at that level. It was a big jump coming from Denmark with Odense but what he's done and the attitude he's got he's achieved that. He is athletically gifted but we knew he would develop tactically and technically."
