CBS has given an early renewal to Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon.

And the news gets even better, as the US network has handed the sitcom not just a third season but a fourth as well, meaning it's sticking around until at least 2021.

Announcing the two-season renewal, Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement: "Thanks to Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s outstanding creative leadership, Young Sheldon has been a powerful performer for the network with an audience that towers over most of the television landscape.”

Thom Sherman, the network's senior executive vice president of programming, added: “The Coopers are portrayed by an amazing cast, and we are looking forward to having the gifted writing staff mine even more of Sheldon’s hilarious backstory and the warm family dynamic that has made this comedy a favourite with audiences for the past two seasons."

Young Sheldon has been a massive ratings hit for CBS from the beginning, with the pilot bringing in 17.2 million viewers.

Across the pond, it became E4's biggest ever comedy launch, pulling in 1.2 million viewers.

The show will hopefully help fill the void that will be left by The Big Bang Theory when it comes to an end after 12 seasons later this year.

But even though the end is fast approaching, executive producer Eric Kaplan has revealed the hour-long two episode finale hasn't been written yet.

"We’re trying to approach it with a lot of care because there are a lot of people for whom this show is emotionally important," Kaplan said.

"There are people who see themselves in the characters and see their family members in them, and it helps them make sense of themselves and make sense of their loved ones and have an optimistic attitude about the challenges of their lives. We want to honour that.

"If people have emotionally invested in us, we want to treat that with the care and respect that it deserves. And it’s supposed to be funny, that adds a whole extra thing. It’s a challenge, but it’s a good challenge. I think we can do it, but we still might screw up."

Young Sheldon airs on CBS in the US and E4 in the UK.
