A stunning estate with 12 cottages is up for sale – for the second time in 700 years.

The historic Hatton Castle Estate is going for £4.5m, located in 850 acres of land, with a walled garden.

Hatton Castle itself is a Category A listed home, which has been owned by the Duff family since 1709.

Alexander Duff of Hatton bought the run-down Place of Balquholly from the Mowat family, who had lived there since the early 1300s.

A second Alexander Duff altered the original building in 1745 and renamed it Hatton Lodge.

It was further remodelled by the 8th Laird of Hatton, Garden Duff, who added two north towers and renamed it Hatton Castle in 1815.

Based in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, has a sweeping stone staircase, which is elegantly positioned in the middle of three pillared archways – with a glass cupola above.

With five floors, the 18, 000 sq ft castle boasts grand entertaining rooms, staff quarters, a gun room and nine bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.

Owners David James-Duff and wife Jayne want to move house, and have put it on the market with Savills and CKD Kennedy Macpherson.

Estate agent Jonathan Kennedy said: “This is a significant and imposing residence, set in its own beautiful country park and estate.

“The shoot is understated and high quality and the location, so close to Aberdeen, should attract wide interest.”
