Zelensky Meets European Leaders in Kyiv

European leaders jointly visited Kyiv on Thursday, June 16, to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky in a show of solidarity with Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz traveled to Kyiv by train. They were met by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who traveled separately.

“We don’t just want to demonstrate solidarity, we also want to assure that the help we organize, financial and humanitarian, but also when it comes to weapons, will be continued,” said Scholz upon his arrival to Kyiv.

President Zelensky has pleaded for more weapons and aid to fend off Russia’s assault in the east as resources begin to run out. He has also said that the next package of sanctions on Russia should include a full embargo on crude oil and natural gas exports.

“We have conveyed to the leaders a full package of sanctions against Russia,” said Andriy Ermak, Head of President Zelensky’s office in a Telegram post. “We must increase the pressure on the aggressor.” Credit: Volodymyr Zelensky via Storyful
