China's 'Most Dangerous Man' Shot Dead By Cops

The hunt for China's most wanted man has ended with a dramatic police shoot-out with the killer.

Vast numbers of troops and police had been called in to help track down 42-year-old bank robber Zhou Kehua.

Unusually for China a nationwide appeal was launched and the search for the suspect became national news.

State television has now revealed how Zhou was shot dead by police in a mountain region on the outskirts of the city of Chongqing.

Zhou was killed four days after his latest attack which spread panic across China. He killed two people in Chongqing in a raid to steal £25,000.

In all, Zhou was accused of killing nine people in a series of bank raids since 2004.

Policeman Zhou Jin described how he came face-to-face with China's most wanted man after being drafted into the search.

The officer and his colleague Wang Xiaoyu have now been paraded on state television as national heroes.

He said: "We were outside a Post Office and I got a call from my superior who said someone who looked like Zhou Kehua had been sighted.

"I was following him from behind while my colleague was on the other side.

"While we were following him he turned back to watch us, then he walked across the road and into an alleyway and sped up.

"We immediately started to chase him. We were only 10 metres away from him when he suddenly turned around and said he was going the wrong way and walked towards us.

"I thought he was going to kill us.

"We pulled out our guns but he fired at us first. I took cover by a wall and we were only three metres away from each other then.

"He fired three shots towards us - one just above my shoulder and one near my foot. He injured my colleague’s ankle.

"Me and my colleague fired two shots each. Then he fell to the ground."
