“13 Reasons Why” star Dylan Minnette explains his break from acting: 'It was starting to feel like just a job'

The former child star has pivoted to music in recent years.

Dylan Minnette opened up about the decision to step back from acting during the height of his career.

The 13 Reasons Why star, who has instead been focused on his music and rock band Wallows, recently appeared alongside bandmates Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston on the Zach Sang Show to discuss his hiatus from Hollywood.

“I was fortunate to find success in [acting],” Minnette said. “I was on 13 Reasons Why and it was really popular and definitely reached a peak. But it also started to feel like a bit of a job. I was in a very fortunate position. It was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like just a job."

Minnette then pivoted to his passion for music. “I feel like I’m in a position now where I can just kind of like do that for a while and get this the farthest it can be,” he said. "The only way that’s gonna happen is if I put my 100 percent time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously. This is a real band. We’re going to do real band things.”

"I'm just following what feels natural and inspiring," Minnette said, adding that he has, in fact, considered a return to the screen. The actor said he initially considered a return to acting last year, but it happened to coincide with the SAG-AFTRA strike.

“I do feel like I have something to give, and that’s probably acting," he said. "I feel like I’m starting to feel inspiration for that again. At some point, when we’ve fulfilled our Wallows duties and we’re all ready to take a break as a band, that’s when I’ll have the perfect inspiration to do something.”

Minnette, who began his career as a child actor at the age of 8, is best known for his role as Clay Jensen in the 2017 Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why, based on the young adult novel by Jay Asher of the same name. It ran for four seasons. It was around 2017 that Minnette formed Wallows. He last appeared on screen in 2022, in Scream as Wes Hicks and in the Elizabeth Holmes miniseries The Dropout as Tyler Shultz.
