6 Holby City characters who could bring down Gaskell

Since Professor John Gaskell first set foot into Holby City hospital, he's left a gripping trail of destruction, lies and manipulation in his wake. Everything he does – no matter how wrong or cruel – seemingly goes under everyone's radar, yet it finally looked like he would get caught out when Roxanna discovered what he'd been up to.

Until the latest episode, that is, when Gaskell deliberately gave her locked-in syndrome, leaving her unable to communicate her findings and Gaskell free to continue his work.

However, his days must now be numbered – especially since we finally have a few characters growing suspicious of him. But who could be the one to bring him down? Here's a list of the main contenders…

1. Meena

Meena is the one who Roxanna tried to confide in, so maybe she'll remain suspicious of Gaskell despite his attempts to manipulate her into blaming herself for the car accident that injured Roxanna. He previously silenced her when she started delving into his patients abroad while she worked on the trial. Gaskell managed to push her away then by kicking her off the team, but will he be able to do it a second time?

Here's hoping Meena starts to snoop around herself, manages to uncover the same secrets as Roxanna and is able to take proof to Hanssen or a higher up (or anyone!) before she gets caught.

She certainly has the know-how to be able to do it, since she worked out the code for his lab door. But she is vulnerable currently, after being involved in the car accident and feeling isolated after losing her friendship with Nicky. Will she be able to pluck up the courage to bring Gaskell down? Or even try, especially since Zav has warned her off?

She is now the only one seemingly questioning him, even a little – so hopefully she doesn't ignore her suspicions and is able to investigate just what the Professor has been up to.

2. Roxanna

Okay, so this might not be the most likely since Gaskell gave her locked-in syndrome in the latest episode, but we recently learned that her mother, who had the same condition, could blink to communicate. So maybe that's the key to how she manages to tell someone about what she's uncovered? It's possible, since she does still have a part to play in the story.

Or maybe, like Mac Nightingale in Hollyoaks, she will become miraculously cured, just in time to finally tell Hanssen or Meena about Gaskell's lies. It might be far-fetched, but could she be the one to reveal all?

3. Zav

Zav might have recently gone to confront Gaskell, thinking he was helping Meena, but now he's urged her to leave the whole thing alone after finding out that the scheming Professor has dirt on him.

However, that doesn't mean that Zav can't have a change of heart. Maybe he realises that in comparison, his dealings with a few patients is worth being exposed, especially considering the lies and body count that Gaskell has amassed in such a short time.

Who knows, maybe he'll even team up and investigate with Meena since they are close, and since both of them are the only two (other than Gaskell himself) that heard Roxanna's panicked voicemail. He was also the one who deleted it, so maybe he wants to make it up to her for seemingly destroying the only evidence they currently have?

4. Hanssen

If it weren't already obvious, then the recent episode full of flashbacks really emphasised the connection between Hanssen and Roxanna, as well as just how much they care for each other.

The feelings that Henrik has for her were particularly clear, but will this be enough for Hanssen to start doubting his old friend John? He's already fallen for his manipulation more than once before and is also very close with him, but maybe he finally sees through Gaskell's facade and brings him down for Roxanna.

Hanssen is also one of the few who know about Roxanna's mother also having locked-in syndrome. Maybe he'll be the one to try to communicate with her in a similar way to how Roxanna did her mother, only to be told the devastating truth about the man they both trusted.

5. Guy Self

We know he's set to return, so could his arrival at the hospital lead to him stumbling across some revolutionary information while trying to actively take Gaskell down a peg?

Or maybe he uncovers Gakell's secrets by accident, whether he's investigating the trial or not? Either way, he'd probably rejoice at having Gaskell removed from the equation now that he's back at Holby. There's only so much room in the hospital for ruthless neurosurgeons, after all...

6. Jac

We know from the autumn trailer that Jac delivers an ultimatum to Gaskell – that he fixes her, and then by the time she's awake, he's out of the hospital for good.

Does that mean that she's the one that uncovers all? Maybe she gets it out of Gaskell somehow, or does some investigating of her own, if, or before, her condition worsens.

Here's hoping that Gaskell actually does as she says and doesn't try to silence her, too – but maybe if her past as a patient in his trial comes back to haunt her and she gets gravely ill, he won't have to. Could that threat be some of her last words, and could Jac end up being the major character to die soon, at Gaskell's hand and all to keep his actions quiet? Well, hopefully not!

Holby City airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One.
