Holby City spoilers follow from tonight's episode and next week's which some readers may prefer to avoid.

In tonight's Holby City episode (July 14), Essie got more bad news, Nicky made a big decision and Guy was tempted back into worrying habits.

Here are the biggest questions we've been left with until next week...

1. What was Essie told?

The closing moments of tonight's slightly unconventional episode suggested that Essie had just been given the devastating news she was dreading, but what exactly what she told by the doctor?

Holby played with time tonight, taking viewers on a three-week journey through the lives of Fletch, Essie, Nicky and Guy.

But while Fletch's ordeal reached a happier conclusion (more on that to follow), it appears to be a very different story for Essie, who has known for weeks that she wasn't going to recover from her cancer diagnosis this time.

2. And what happens next?

Essie's sad but equally powerful story will take centre stage again next week, with another break from Holby house style.

That's because Joe McFadden has reprised his role as Essie's late husband Raf Di Lucca, who was killed off in a shocking story back in 2017.

However, there's been no back-from-the-dead miracle here, as Raf will only appear to Essie as a figment of her imagination, as she desperately searches for a purpose to her devastating fate.

3. Can Nicky get her life back on track?

Nicky's story continued to be told tonight, as we watched the three-week fallout of her heart attack.

As Nicky recovered – first in hospital and then at home – she was forced to make some very difficult decisions when her work and home life collided in a catastrophic way.

Encouraged by Jac, who insisted that she was a talented doctor and could do this on her own, Nicky ultimately decided to cut ties with her chaotic mum Tracy for the sake of her health.

All eyes will now be on Nicky as she tries to get her life back on track over the coming weeks, and there could be a little romance twist in the mix as well...

4. Is that the last we've seen of Tracey?

An emotional Nicky made it clear that she needed to distance herself from her mum tonight, so is that the last we've seen of Tracey ?

Former EastEnders star Cathy Murphy has been playing Tracey on and off for the last few months, but we understand that she won't be featuring in any more upcoming episodes in the near future as Nicky sticks to her decision.

5. Is Fletch in remission?

After a long and anxious wait, Fletch was relieved to hear that his cancer hadn't returned and he should make a full recovery.

Fletch was diagnosed with prostate cancer last month, but was left fearing for his future when his consultant told him that there was some test evidence to suggest that he'd had a relapse. Thankfully, he later learned that it was a false alarm but Fletch's joy turned to sorrow when he realised that the same didn't apply for Essie.

6. Is Guy on a downward spiral?

Guy was left on the brink of despair tonight, when the complex neurological operation he was performing on a patient went tragically wrong.

Despite knowing the procedure came packed with a plethora of risks from the start, Guy was hit particularly badly by the outcome, having been determined to prove that he's still the man he once was.

The closing moments of the episode hinted that recovering alcoholic Guy was about to be tempted back into worrying habits, as he stared longingly at a glass of wine. Is he about to fall off the wagon? Well, Ric certainly thinks so...

7. Will Ric get rid of Guy?

Regardless of what he does next, Guy could have even more problems to contend with, thanks to his old nemesis Ric.

As Guy wrestled with his demons in Albie's, he was unaware that he was being watched by Ric – who has been suspicious of his intentions from the start.

Sure enough, Ric will be launching his own personal vendetta against Guy next week, convinced that he is drinking again. But how far is he willing to go to get Guy out of the hospital?

Holby City continues on Tuesday, July 21 at 8pm on BBC One.
