Forget turkey, mince pies and presents – all we really want for Christmas is for the soaps to deliver, right?

It's an exciting time to be a soap fan as EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks are all gearing up to air big, hour-long specials, meaning our festive wishes lie not with Father Christmas but firmly in the hands of the soap Gods.

With that in mind, here are seven things we want to happen in the episodes. Not that we're demanding or anything, we've just been very good this year…

1. A Robron reunion (Emmerdale)

A Robron reunion is right at the top of our Christmas wish list, despite the fact we are likely going to have to wait a little longer for it anyway. That means the best we can hope for during the show's quirky Christmas episode is some form of redemption for Robert, which will ultimately pave the way for his inevitable reconciliation with Aaron next year.

Both Robert and Aaron are taking centre stage in the Emmerdale's experimental festive special, which has been inspired by A Christmas Carol and Groundhog Day. Robert will be pushed to his limits as he continually wakes on Christmas morning to a different reality and struggles to escape his perpetual nightmare – but could the experience lead Robert to reevaluate some of his deplorable behaviour of late? We can hope!

2.Redemption for Max (EastEnders)

He's spent the entire year trying to ruin the lives of almost everyone around him, but we've been promised Max's downfall on an apocalyptic scale on Christmas Day as all his secrets are exposed. But whether the villain can be redeemed in the aftermath is a question possibly only the Christmas special can answer.

Jake Wood has said himself that his bad boy character needs to be redeemed if he's going to have any longevity in the show beyond Christmas – so we're keeping our fingers crossed.

3. Justice for Jane and Steven (EastEnders)

EastEnders will be revealing the last of Max Branning's scandalous secrets when Stacey Fowler is reunited with her phone on Christmas Day. And we're hoping that no stone will be left unturned as this plot reaches its long-awaited conclusion.

Max has recently gone public with his shocking scheme for revenge against Albert Square, but his loved ones are still in the dark over the rest of it - most notably his treatment of Jane and Steven. Fortunately, Jane left a rather important voicemail message for Stacey in her final episode in October, revealing how Max was responsible for Steven's death and nearly killed her too.

With Jake Wood promising the best Christmas in years, and Jacqueline Jossa calling the episode "catastrophic" for the Brannings, we're willing for all the lose ends to be tied up in these scenes. And with Simon Ashdown penning the script, something tell us we could get our wish with this one.

4. Romance for Courtney and Jesse (Hollyoaks)

All they want for Christmas is each other, and despite Granny Campbell's cruel intentions, we're hoping Christmas cupid will work his magic on these two . We've already revealed how Jesse will declare his love for Courtney in a card on Christmas Eve, shortly before she goes into labour - but fans will have to wait and see whether this is all leading to a festive union for the pair.

Will Courtney and Jesse get their happy ending? And will Granny Campbell sling her hook for good? Come on Hollyoaks, make it happen!

5. Milo's secret exposed (Hollyoaks)

Milo might be preparing to spend Christmas with his beloved Cunningham family, but it wouldn't be Soapland if things were that simple. Given that the clan are still blissfully unaware of their lodger's dark history, we are hoping that the writers are setting up the scene for an explosive Cunningham Christmas that will see Milo's true identity finally revealed at last.

Milo has been harbouring his dark secret connection to the family for months, but it will come under threat once evil DS Armstrong is out of jail. And what better time than the show's hour-long special to get everything out in the open?

6. A rejuvenated Carla (Coronation Street)

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last few months, you'll know that Carla is heading back to Corrie this Christmas – along with the promise that she'll be a new woman.

Last time we saw Carla, she was fleeing Weatherfield after her disastrous marriage to Nick; shamed broken and utterly exhausted. But rumour has it that a year or so away has done wonders for the fan favourite, with show boss Kate Oates promising that it's time to break new ground with Carla.

So, will Carla's Christmas comeback live up its expectations? We will just have to wait and see. But given that she's being thrown straight into a mysterious, new story, we're hopeful.

7. Hope for for Ste and Harry (Hollyoaks)

One of the biggest shocks in Hollyoaks' recent trailer was the moment that former enemies Ryan and Ste seemed to be moving in for a kiss at Christmas. But come on, we all know that Harry Thompson is the real love of Ste's life.

Whether the stars will eventually align for Starry remains to be seen, but a bit of festive hope for the pair's future wouldn't go amiss please, Hollyoaks Gods...
