  • Oprah Winfrey shared a health update with fans after she missed a planned appearance on CBS Mornings.

  • Her friend and CBS Mornings host Gayle King said Oprah had a stomach virus.

  • “This is Oprah’s ‘I’m alright’ face,” King said.

On Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey was unable to join Gayle King on CBS Mornings to debut her new book club pick because she went to the emergency room for stomach virus-related dehydration. In a new update shared to Instagram, Winfrey and King clarified that it was just that—an ER visit. She wasn’t hospitalized, and she’s at home now, resting, she shared.

King initially shared the news on CBS Mornings. She had some kind of stomach thing—stomach flu—stuff was coming out of both ends,” she said. “I won’t get too graphic. Needless to say, she ended up in the hospital, dehydration, had to get an IV... It was a very serious thing... She will be okay. I hope she's not mad at me for sharing that detail.”

In the follow-up update, King connected with Winfrey via FaceTime to clear the air. “I never said you were hospitalized, I did say that you had a stomach something, was coming out of both sides, which it was,” King said in the video. Winfrey responded: “I was in the emergency room, I was so dehydrated. I had a dry mouth and I couldn’t keep enough water down to get hydrated, so I went to the emergency room for that.”

Winfrey added that she was “too weak” to make the flight to join King on-screen. At the moment, though, she’s feeling better—“not 100 [%],” she said. “I’m on my way to 100.”

With that, she urged viewers to wash their hands and stay aware. Her doctor, she said, warned that the virus she contracted is contagious and can be picked up on things like door knobs and other high-touch surfaces. In fact, five people in Winfrey’s own home came down with the same bug, she added.

Both King and Winfrey reiterated, however, that Winfrey is doing OK, and they both showed appreciation for fans’ concern about her health. “Everybody I’ve ever known who has access to my email has called me to say, ‘Are you alright?’ Thanks!” Winfrey laughed. King added: “This is Oprah’s ‘I’m alright’ face.”

We’re glad to hear the media mogul is on the mend—and hope to see her on-air soon.
