Why is TV so much better when it's live? Because of everything that can go wrong, of course #sorry #notsorry.

From presenters accidentally taking a tumble, to sets breaking, to members of the audience cheekily stealing the show, anything can happen. And sometimes, impromptu moments don't always work out for the best – especially when our favourite TV stars go off-script.

Here, we take a look back at some of the most unexpected live TV confrontations that have been anything but entertaining for viewers. Brace yourselves, this is an uncomfortable read...

1. Kay Burley makes Peter Andre cry

It seemed as though Kay momentarily forgot that Peter was a human being with real emotions during this interview for Sky News, and it all got a little awkward.

The presenter grilled him relentlessly about his kids in the aftermath of his split from Katie Price. "Do [your children] know that their mummy's got married [to Alex Reid]?" she asked, before moving on to the prospect of him losing access to his kids.

Even though Peter was becoming VERY upset (the tears were a pretty big giveaway), Kay didn't stop there – she was going straight for the jugular. Several times. Until Peter finally terminated the live interview.

2. The Celebrity Big Brother racism scandal

This moment made TV history for all the wrong reasons – and to this day, we're still not sure why Channel 4 aired it. Back in 2007, during series five of CBB, Jade Goody's treatment of Shilpa Shetty sparked 44,500 complaints to Ofcom with an additional 3,000 sent directly to Channel 4.

During a row over a stock cube (of all things), Jade told Shilpa she was "not no f**king princess here", and needed "a day in the slums". The next day, Jade referred to Shilpa as "Shilpa Pashwa f**king whoever you are" and "Shilpa Poppadom". The racist comments made for seriously uncomfortable viewing and prompted a huge public backlash, with viewers vowing to boycott the show.

Following an investigation, Ofcom ruled that there were "serious editorial misjudgments" which resulted in Channel 4 conducting a thorough editorial review of Celebrity Big Brother.

3. Brendan Cole shows up Kelly Brook

Okay, we know Brendan is an outspoken individual who likes to stand his ground, but this Strictly Come Dancing moment was just awkward. After delivering a pretty underwhelming performance for the judges, the feedback understandably wasn't great. But Brendan refused to take the comments on board. So much so that he ended up getting into a spat with Len Goodman – and Kelly was mortified.

The model appeared to be going redder and redder as she tried to get Brendan to shut up. But it didn't work. Making matters worse, as he tried to defend Kelly's performance, he ended up insulting her ability, telling the judges, "Stop expecting her to be the world's best dancer because she's not!" Poor Kelly quit the show not long after.

4. Tommy Robinson is cut short on GMB

Good Morning Britain viewers knew to expect an intense interview when ex-English Defence League leader Tommy came face-to-face with Piers Morgan. But nobody expected the exchange to get quite as out of hand as it did.

The controversial figure shocked those tuning in when he started claiming the Koran was to blame for terrorist attacks. When he then pulled out a copy and branded it "violent" and "cursed", Piers completely lost his temper, telling Tommy to show "some damn respect".

As the pair started shouting loudly at each other, Susanna stepped in to put an end to the drama. "Tommy, we are going to have to stop you there," she told him before abruptly finishing the segment.

5. Kerry Katona's 'mortifying' interview

This may be one of the most uncomfortable live TV moments of all time. Kerry just didn't seem right as she slurred her way through an interview with Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton back in 2008. Concerned This Morning viewers feared she was drunk or on drugs, and urged her to seek professional help.

Two years later, having got herself back on track, Kerry returned to the show and admitted she was "mortified" over what happened. She revealed she wasn't drunk or on drugs but was actually taking very strong medication that had left her feeling "suicidal".

"I was in a very dark place," she said. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people around me. I've moved away. I wasn't a good person then. And it's hard to watch it back, it's hard, oh my God [to think that] my kids are going to have to watch this when they grow up."

Kerry has since credited the interview for giving her a much-needed wake-up call.

6. Piers Morgan takes down a 12-year-old

Okay, we completely understand why Piers wasn't the biggest fan of Aryanna Gourdin. The 12-year-old was on Good Morning Britain with her father after boasting about hunting and killing animals. But things got a little uncomfortable when, live on TV, he asked the pre-teen how she would feel if he killed her pet cat.

"On your Facebook page, there's lots of pictures of you cuddling your pet cat – you've got a lovely pet cat," he said. "How would you feel if I came into your house one day and I hunted down your pet cat and I killed it, and I posted pictures of me celebrating the slaughter of your pet cat?"

Sure, he got his point across, but it was a strange comment to make to a 12-year-old.

7. Katie Hopkins targets a cancer victim

We shouldn't be surprised by anything that comes out of Katie Hopkins' mouth. But who couldn't help feeling disgusted when the ex-Apprentice hopeful appeared on Loose Women and started picking on breast cancer survivor Linda Nolan for having a "droopy breast".

When her sister Coleen Nolan confronted Katie about the comment, the controversial figure refused to apologise. Instead, she started boasting about how "entertaining" her Twitter followers find her.

8. Fame Academy: Patrick Kielty vs Richard Park

We expect a bit of banter between TV show judges and presenters – but Patrick Kielty and Richard Park took it to another level.

Considering this was a frothy talent show on the BBC, these two REALLY hated each other. The pair regularly clashed throughout Fame Academy's second run in 2003, and their animosity even spilled over into the celebrity version for Comic Relief.

Things got so bad between the pair – on a celebrity charity special no less – that Park was once spotted making a very rude gesture behind Kielty's back before the watershed.

Erm... take it outside, fellas.
