Actress Charlotte Rampling Insists Her #OscarsSoWhite Comments Were ‘Misinterpreted’

So after putting her foot in it in quite a major way this week, Charlotte Rampling has now gone and said that her comments on Hollywood diversity ‘could’ve been misinterpreted’.

The actress – nominated this year for her role in the film '45 Years’ had told a French station, Europe 1, that the #OscarsSoWhite movement was 'racist’ to white people.

Er, nope.

Anyway, after being roundly eye-rolled by most sane people in the world, Charlotte issued to a statemnt to CBS News, saying: “I simply meant to say that in an ideal world every performance will be given equal opportunities for consideration. I am very honoured to be included in this year’s wonderful group of nominated actors and actresses.”

She continued: “Diversity in our industry is an important issue that needs to be addressed, and I am highly encouraged by the changes announced today by the academy to diversify its membership.”

After Jada Pinkett Smith called for a boycott of the Academy Awards this week because of the lack of black nominees, Charlotte told Europe 1 that:

“We can never know whether it’s truly the case, but maybe the black actors didn’t deserve to make it to the final list.”

She also criticised the need for BAME and female quotas in the industry, stating: “Why classify people? We live in a time now where everyone is more or less accepted,” and said that anger at the lack of BAME nominees went: "… in the other direction: It’s racist against whites.”

Ahh, white people – victims of discrimination and persecution since the dawn of time, right!?

Anyway, it seems Chaz is now very much open to a discussion on diversity in Hollywood, which we guess is a step in the right direction.
