A man has died in hospital after being handcuffed by police who said he was behaving "aggressively" towards them.

The man, aged in his 40s, was found lying in the road by officers in Welling shortly before 1am on Thursday.

Scotland Yard said that as police tried to assist him he began to act aggressively and was placed in handcuffs.

He then lost consciousness before he was taken to a south London hospital by paramedics where he died.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Whilst officers were attempting to assist the man he began to act aggressively - officers placed him in handcuffs. The man then became unconscious.

"His next of kin are in the process of being located and informed.

“A post-mortem examination and formal identification will be scheduled in due course.

“As is routine, the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) has been informed. Enquires continue."
