Alan Shearer nails Anthony Gordon England snub with verdict Newcastle fans will love

Alan Shearer has hit out at Anthony Gordon's continued absence from England's starting XI.

The Scouse star was left on the bench for the 1-1 draw against Denmark in Group C as the stalemate left supporters angry at Gordon's exclusion. It remains to be seen whether Gareth Southgate hands Gordon a chance in the final group clash against Slovenia next Tuesday.

Shearer spoke of Sir Bobby Robson's excellent management during his co-commentary with Guy Mowbray when the ex-England manager introduced pace around him from the likes of Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy. Shearer suggested that Harry Kane needed something similar.

A frustrated Shearer said on BBC: "As I got older I needed pace in and around me. I could still score goals, head the ball, get into positions in the box, but one thing I could not do is run in behind.

"Harry Kane is the same now, he needs players that have the legs to run beyond and make the space. That's why I would have Anthony Gordon in the team, Phil Foden is occupying the same spaces as Kane at the moment and it's not working."

Shearer also felt that Southgate should be getting more of a tune out of the talented bunch of stars at his disposal. He went on: "Gareth at the minute is not getting the best out of England's best players."
