Albatrosses found with stomachs full of plastic in heartbreaking footage
A film-maker has captured harrowing footage of albatrosses killed by eating plastic waste – on a Pacific Island 2,000 miles from the nearest continent.
Chris Jordan’s film Albatross captures the plight of birds on Midway, where plastic waste has killed thousands of birds.
Rotting albatross corpses reveal the plastic waste which has killed them – on a nature reserve where 1.5 million birds live.
Adult albatross actually feed their youngsters plastic waste, mistaking it for the brightly coloured squid they normally eat.
Film-maker Jordan first visited the island in 2009.
He told the Guardian, ‘There’s something so archetypal about these legendary birds and seeing bright colours of ocean plastic against dead sterility is a powerful symbol for our human culture right now. We’re in a state of emotional bankruptcy,
‘This material lasts forever, yet we throw it away after a single use. But it’s not as simple as inspiring individuals to make small changes.
