Aldi, Asda, Boots, Sainsbury's, Morrisons issue emergency alert and say 'we've been made aware'

Aldi, Asda and Sainsbury's are embroiled in a huge food recall amid an E.coli outbreak. Greencore Group is taking the precautionary step of recalling various sandwiches, wraps and salads because of possible contamination with E. coli, Food Standards Agency says.

The FSA said: "Greencore Group is taking the precautionary step of recalling various sandwiches, wraps and salads because of possible contamination with E. coli. E.coli has not been detected in the products listed below but are being recalled as a precaution."

The possible presence of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC) in the products listed above. Symptoms caused by STEC organisms include severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain, and sometimes haemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal.

The alerts impact Boots, Aldi, Asda, Sainsbury's, Co-op and Morrisons. An Asda spokesperson went on in a statement and said: "We have been made aware by Greencore, who supply Asda and other retailers with pre-packed sandwiches, that they are recalling a number of products as a precaution because of the possible presence of E.coli.

"The full list of products is available on the Asda Product Recalls webpage. If you have purchased any of these products, do not eat them, please bring them back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund."

It said: "You do not need your receipt." Last week, 113 reported cases of E.coli were linked to a "nationally distributed food item", the UKHSA said, without giving any more detail on the product thought to be responsible.

The cases ranged from two years old to 79, with the majority of the infections in young adults. It said: "We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would like any further information, please contact: Asda Customer Relations - 08009520101"
