Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho told Kobbie Mainoo he is "the best" after the duo scored in Saturday's 2-1 win over neighbours Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Despite heading into the contest as underdogs, United prevailed underneath the famous arch, inspired by first half goals from the aforementioned duo. Garnacho pounced on a City defensive mix up before Mainoo finished off an excellent move with an ice-cool finish.

United's defence, anticipating a City onslaught in the second half, stood firm and was only breached when Jeremy Doku's shot from outside the penalty area squeezed past Andre Onana at his near post. The Cameroonian should have done better.

Although Doku's late effort set up a tense finale, United held firm to get the job done and seal their first FA Cup crown since 2016. It was nothing more than what they deserved, producing an excellent performance to stifle City.

Mainoo, regardless of the fact he got himself on the scoresheet, was excellent in the centre of midfield, bossing proceedings and helping his teammates keep the likes of Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne quiet. Mainoo admitted after the game that it was United's aim to restrict City in the centre of the pitch.

Scoring at Wembley capped off a stunning breakout season for Mainoo, who made his first Premier League start against Everton at Goodison Park as recently as November. A boyhood United supporter, the 19-year-old posted a powerful message on his Instagram page post-match.

He said: "By any means necessary! God bless this football club. FA CUP CHAMPIONS 2024."

Mainoo's post, which featured a collection of images and a video, attracted thousands of responses and congratulatory messages. Among them was one from fellow academy product Garnacho, who replied: "You are the best," accompanied with a love heart emoji.

Mainoo and Garnacho, who both started the FA Youth Cup final victory against Nottingham Forest in May 2022, have created an excellent relationship, both on and off the field. Their goals at Wembley on Saturday has now etched each of their names into United folklore.
