England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw is ahead of schedule and could feature tonight in the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia.

Shaw has been missing since February when he was forced off against Luton Town with a muscular issue. It was a problem that was picked up the previous week against Aston Villa but the decision was made to risk the full-back.

This would, of course, backfire and Shaw would sit out the remainder of the domestic season. Reflecting on the injury, the 28-year-old admitted that there was plenty of blame to be passed around. "I felt something against Aston Villa and came off at half-time," he explained recently.

"I didn't train the whole week and when the scan came back, there wasn't too much there. I then trained the day before the game (at Luton) - and if the manager asks me to play, I'm never going to say 'no.' But I shouldn't have played.

"It's kind of everyone's fault. Partly my fault, partly the medical staff. I think everyone would admit that."

Due to these issues, few believed Southgate would take Shaw to the European Championships in Germany but the England boss decided to take the risk, in his own words, and include him. Since then, Southgate has claimed Shaw could return for the fixture with Denmark on Thursday but in his pre-Serbia press conference he hinted that it could be sooner than that.

"Everyone's available," Southgate said. "We have a decision on whether Luke is a possible to use from the bench or not, but everyone has trained [on Saturday] and is available."

The Three Lions begin their Euro 2024 campaign in Gelsenkirchen tonight before travelling to Frankfurt on Thursday to face Denmark and rounding off their Group C fixtures with a trip to Cologne to face Slovenia.
