Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil’s fiery romance takes centre stage in Sam Taylor Johnson's Back To Black biopic. The singing legend died aged 27 of alcohol intoxication in July 2011 and now filmmakers hope to remind Back To Black audiences that Winehouse was a talent – not just a tragedy.

In February this year, Fielder-Civil got inked with a new teardrop tattoo in tribute to the late singer. Many will remember that Winehouse had drawn a teardrop on her face when Fielder-Civil was sent to a prison hospital in 2008.

Inspired by the sparks of their on/off romance, Winehouse poured all her emotions into her album Back To Black which was released in October 2006 including the song Tears Dry On Their Own. As the biopic titled the same as her album Back To Black is released on April 12, we take a look at their love story and how it all fell apart...

How did Amy Winehouse meet Blake Fielder-Civil?

By a twist of fate, the couple fell in love when they met at The Good Mixer pub in Camden in 2005. It was the perfect scene for their meeting, an old-fashioned pub with live music and pool tables. Fielder-Civil was feeling lucky, having just won a bet and then he laid his eyes on Winehouse for the first time, the rest is history.

Within a week, Winehouse got her famous inking of his name 'Blake' across her heart. Equally besotted, Fielder-Civil had her name tattooed on his ears. However, their relationship broke up and become the inspiration for her iconic 2006 album Back To Black.

When did they get engaged?

Two and a half years later, the couple decided to give love a second chance. Swept up in the whirlwind of their love, they got engaged. Fielder-Civil popped the question with a dazzling diamond ring from Tiffanys and Winehouse said yes.

The singer shared her hopes of an everlasting love following their engagement news with the press. She told The Sun: "I hope to be with him for the rest of my life."

When did they get married?

One month after reconciling their romance, the happy couple said "I do" in Miami in Florida in May. Her representative Tracey Miller had confirmed the news to PEOPLE: "Yes, Amy did marry today in Miami."

Romance was in the air with the pair inseparable from each other while they spent three days at The Shore Club hotel on South Beach. At the time, they were the picture of happy newlyweds - kissing and holding hands.

Winehouse revealed how their love had blossomed again. She told Entertainment Weekly in 2007: "We’ve been back together about a month, but we’ve been seeing a lot of each other for quite a few months... We are best friends."

But it wasn't meant to be. Despite their high hopes for their love, their marriage was stormy and drug-fuelled. Fielder-Civil was jailed in 2008 for an assault on a pub landlord.

In 2009, they called time on their marriage. They got a divorce after pictures emerged of Winehouse getting close to Josh Bowman in the Caribbean. At the time, the singer was quoted in the News of the World as saying: "I've finally escaped from hell. I'm in love again and I don't need drugs. Look at me, I'm glowing!"

Looking back last year, Fielder-Civil wore his heart on his sleeve while discussing their romance. Her ex-husband said he could no longer carry the burden for Winehouse's death on what would have been her 40th birthday in September as he shared his belief that people still hold him "responsible".

During their marriage and love, the production assistant admitted he had made some "huge mistakes". He said on Good Morning Britain: "For me personally, I’ve needed to stop carrying that cross on my own. I’ve carried that burden myself for over 10 years. I feel, to be honest, that I’m the only person within that story that’s ever held any accountability, that’s ever tried to say, ‘Yep, I made some huge mistakes.’"

Speaking about those mistakes, Fielder-Civil said: "I was a 20-something-year-old drug addict. So I had absolutely no idea how to make myself clean, let alone somebody else who was a big cog in a machine for a record label, and there were vested interests in Amy carrying on performing."

Back to Black is in UK cinemas on 12 April.
