Angry Glasgow parents hit out at overgrown parks leaving kids with 'nowhere to go'

Parents have slammed Glasgow City Council over the sorry state of the city's parks demanding that the authority takes urgent action to bring them back to life.

Overgrown grass is a huge issue across many of Glasgow's parks used by mums and dads to entertain their little ones, dog walkers and joggers.

They fear children could pick up dirt, including dog poo, while wandering around the play area unable to see what's on the surface due to the towering lawn.

One dad took to TikTok to express his frustration after walking through Ashtree Park in the Pollokshaws area.

Sharing the clip from his account @lockplus, he told viewers: "While I was walking the dog this morning, I spotted this sign on the bin - 'People make Glasgow cleaner'.

"Take a look at the video because if people make Glasgow cleaner, Glasgow City Council are absolutely ripping the place apart. Just look at the place, it's an absolute s****hole.

"This is Ashtree Park in Pollokshaws. The excuse for not cutting the grass will (probably) be for the wildlife but my question is, when did the wildlife become more important than human life?

"This isn't an affluent area, they've not got back or front gardens. This is most of the outdoor space they have got. If you're struggling with bad mental health and they say get outside, where can I go? I cannae go sit in the park or walk my dog in the park. I can't take my son to play in the park.

"When are they actually going to do something? Get round here and get the grass cut, it's a joke."

The TikTok video has since gone viral racking up over 36,000 views and close to 2,000 likes, with many agreeing that something needs to be done.

Elsewhere in the city, a west end mum is furious after taking her toddler to the Glasgow Mela on Sunday (June 23) at Kelvingrove Park to find that the grass was in an abysmal state.

She moaned: "We visited the Glasgow Mela at the weekend, and the state of Kelvingrove Park was shocking - it looked like the grass hadn’t been cut in weeks.

"Near the main stage, it was as tall as my one-year-old toddler and the grass was practically hitting him in the face as he ran about.

"It’s strange that it wasn’t tidied up before 40,000 people visited for a major event, but it seems to be the case at so many Glasgow parks just now.

"Dowanhill Park, near where we live, is exactly the same and the play park is always a bit neglected despite the fact that it’s really busy, with a school and two nurseries next door.

"The problem is that rubbish and even dog poo gathers in the long grass and it’s a worry when you have little ones running about, picking up anything they see."

Glasgow City Council has been approached for comment.
