Animated Spider-Man Movie Finds Its Director

Tom Holland’s live-action Spider-Man reboot isn’t the only Spidey film currently in the works. Sony Pictures is also putting together an animated feature starring the iconic web-slinger.

And that project now has a director in the form of feature film-debutante Bob Persichetti, who will work towards a planned release date in December 2018.

- Bryan Singer Wants A Mystique Solo Movie

When Sony announced the film, ‘The Lego Movie’ and '21 Jump Street'directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were named as the people overseeing the project, as well as writing its script.

When the pair were hired to direct the upcoming 'Star Wars’ spin-off film about a young Han Solo, they moved on, but according to Den of Geek, Phil Lord will still receive a writing credit.

Bob Persichetti may not have directed a film before, but he has an extensive history working in the animation studios of both Disney and Dreamworks, with a CV that includes films like 'Hercules’, 'Tarzan’, 'Treasure Planet’ and 'Shrek 2’.

That’s a good resume, and animation has been a wonderful arena for first-time directors to really excel. Throw in the influence of Lord and Miller, the potential of an animated Spider-Man film and this is looking very promising.

Little is known about the film’s plot, but fans are hopeful it will star Miles Morales, a character who took over the Spider-Man mantle in 2011 and has proved very popular.

If Morales was to star, it would be a big differential between this Spider-Man and Sony’s live-action film (apart from that being live-action of course). It would also give the film an opportunity to cover ground the Spidey films to date have not.

The film is currently set for release on 21 December 2018.
