While some have been swept up in the momentum of Jeremy Corbyn's previously improbable surge to the top of the Labour party, it appears many others don't want to give their children the Labour leader's name.

According to ONS data, the name was enjoying a 10-year high in popularity in 2014 - 99 newborns were called Jeremy.

After Jeremy Corbyn became leader in 2015, fewer people were giving their child his name.

In 2015, the number of new parents giving their baby the same name as the Labour leader fell to 78, and it decreased yet again in 2016 to 54; just over half what it was two years previously.

The name fell over 200 places in the popularity rankings during this time period.

'Jeremy' was the 408th most popular boys' name in 2014, and by 2016 it fell to 647th.

People don't appear to be as shy to give their children the same names as other political figures.

The number of Theresas has risen slightly, from 15 in 2015 to 19 in 2016.

The name 'Boris' is up from 32 in 2015 to 39 in 2016.

Despite reports of parents considering naming their children Corbyn after the Labour leader, in practice it didn't appear to happen on a large scale.

Just 18 babies were given the name in 2016, slightly up from 15 in 2015.

There were six new entries into the top 100 most popular boys’ names in 2016 for England and Wales: Albie, Arlo, Ezra, Finn, Jasper and Jesse. These replaced Callum, Connor, Jamie, Kian, Seth and Sonny, which were in the top 100 in 2015.

There were four new entries in the top 100 most popular girls’ names in 2016 in England and Wales: Felicity, Iris, Luna and Lydia. These replaced Bethany, Hollie, Katie and Lacey.

The influence of popular culture continues to seemingly provide inspiration for new parents. Perhaps in honour of Game of Thrones, there were 302 Aryas in 2016, up from 280 in 2015.

Zayn - a name shared by a member of One Direction - also rose up the popularity stakes with 296 boys given the name in 2016 compared with 255 the year before.
