Bake Off champion Nadiya Hussain has slammed vile Twitter trolls who told her to “go home”.

The celebrity baker, 32, defended herself against “hatred” after she was accused of not belonging in the UK.

Hitting back, Hussain – who was born and raised in Luton – tweeted: “Have you not realised by now, that saying ‘go home’ is just not working any more. Go home to where? I am home?

“If you want to spew hatred at least come up with something original I’m getting fed up of being told to go home! For the millionth time, I AM HOME!”

In another tweet she told how her grandfather was beaten when he moved his Bangladeshi family to the UK to give them a better life.

She posted: “I will tell you what does not belong in this country, your putrid smelling holier than thou attitude! My grandad was beaten in the streets, spat at and kicked on so we could have a better life. If he drew blood for us I can take your nasty words. Do your damage! Go on ...”

One user told her she shouldn’t have to face frequent online abuse, to which she replied: “No I don’t ! But I’m Muslim, Brown, working class and a woman! I may as well have punching bag written on my torso. But I’m here, despite being told constantly I don’t belong. I’m here to take one for the team.”

Hussain scolded another troll, who claimed Islam is a “backward” and “harmful” religion, for instilling fear in those who have faith.

She tweeted: “This is the reason why people are afraid to speak about faith. Afraid to be proud. I am proud of my faith and what it gives me. I am always happy to answer questions and talk about it honestly”

She urged another to spend a day with her family, saying they would “choke on [their] own words” when they discovered she practices “peace”.

Hussain found fame after winning the 2015 series of The Great British Bake Off.

She went on to make the Queen's 90th birthday cake, publish a cookery book and front shows including The Chronicles of Nadiya and Big Family Cooking Showdown.

Last year she was praised by Nigella Lawson for defending herself in the face of racist abuse online.
