The world has only just recovered from Apple’s decision to get rid of the headphone port on iPhone 7 – but another big change might be coming.

The company is rumoured to be thinking about ditching iPhone’s Lightning port – and one analyst has described the move as ‘inevitable’.

Instead, the new device (expected in September) might have a USB-C port – which would mean users would have to buy new chargers, docks and connectors, according to Wall Street Journal.

Apple analyst Tim Bajarin told Mashable that he feels the move is inevitable saying, ‘I have no doubt they will eventually unify all connectors around USB-C. It’s just a matter of time.

The USB-C port is used for charging on phones such as Google’s Pixel – and Apple recently adopted the port on its MacBook line.

Adopting it would allow iPhones to charge much faster, experts have suggested.

The WSJ suggests that the new device will have a ‘USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company’s original Lightning connector.’

MacRumors says it’s not clear whether Apple will drop its own Lightning port – and that instead, the USB-C cable will be used to connect direct to Macs.

Apple faced outrage last year after dropping the headphone cable on iPhone 7 – but users have largely adapted to the change.

The new phone is expected to launch in September at a special event, as is traditional from Apple.
