Aquaman's 2018 release still feels a long way off, but details are beginning to sneak out, including the identity of the DC movie's villain.

Jason Momoa's lord of Atlantis will face off against the superhero's best-known villain, Black Manta, according to The Wrap.

Black Manta is portrayed as a (hu)man with a vendetta against the half-Atlantean Aquaman, which culminated at one point in the murder of Aquaman's young son.

His origin was unknown for a long time and has been tweaked multiple times. Sometimes he has been depicted as having been treated (or maltreated) for autism at Arkham Asylum in his youth - never a good idea if you don't want to turn your kid into a supervillain.

The previous rumour was that the movie would actually feature two villains, so we're still keeping our fingers crossed for Queequeg or the Malignant Amoeba.

Momoa was seen briefly in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will make his on-screen debut in 2017's Justice League.

In other news, the actor is apparently up for the lead role in the long-gestating The Crow remake.

Aquaman will be released on July 27, 2018.
