Arrest after woman dies in crash on main road in Bolton

A woman in her 60s has died after a crash involving two cars in Bolton.

The emergency services attended St Helens Road yesterday (June 22).

On arrival there were multiple people with injuries and today, Sunday, the police said a woman in her 60s has died of her injuries.

They said a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and an investigation is ongoing.

GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are asking for people to send CCTV, dashcam footage or doorbell footage of the crash involving two cars, a Mercedes and a Nissan.

Fire engines, police cars, ambulances, and air ambulances were scrambled to the scene and the road was cordoned off into the evening.

Detective Constable Aarron Cramer, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a tragic incident where someone has lost their life and we are supporting the families of those involved at this sad time.

"We are continuing our investigation as we work out the cause of this collision and we would urge anyone with any information to get in touch with us. No matter how big or small your information could assist our work."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 7pm firefighters were called to reports of a crash on St Helens Road in Bolton.

“Two fire engines from Farnworth and Hindley fire stations quickly arrived at the scene, which involved two vehicles.

"Firefighters cut one casualty free from their vehicle.

"Three other casualties had self rescued before the arrival of the fire service and were transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service and conveyed to hospital."

The accident happened close to Asda.

Cars parked in Asda car park were unable to leave as emergency services worked.

One bus was stuck within the cordon and later released.

Although the cause of this collision is under investigation, many at the scene spoke about the road and called for it to be made safer for both pedestrians and motorists following a number of crashes.

A local business owner said: "We didn't see it as we were inside.

"But we did hear it. It is so horrible to see, and we are upset that this has happened here.

"Accidents are common but I don't know why."
