With face coverings still a requirement while out in public, many athleticwear brands are going one step further and producing masks designed for rigorous activity. The latest innovation by ASICS is one the Japanese company has been working on for months, and it might be one of the most technologically-advanced coverings on the market.

Ahead of developing the Runners Face Cover, the brand conducted a worldwide survey and found that 66% of active individuals avoid certain routes or spaces to maintain social distance with others. In that same review, ASICS also determined that globally, 7 in 10 (68% globally; 65% in the U.S.) people are more motivated than ever to return to find some normalcy in physical activity.

“We know how important it is for runners to protect themselves and others when running, but also that many find face covers uncomfortable and restrictive,” Kenichi Harano, Executive Officer and Senior General Manager at the ASICS Institute of Sport Science said. “So, we created the ASICS RUNNERS FACE COVER, uniquely designed for runners with cutting-edge technology. The innovative design gives runners room to breathe comfortably while performing at their physical peak.”

Features in this cover go way beyond aesthetics. Unlike standard covers, the unique curved structure creates more room inside to allow for easier breathing when running. This accessory also has strategically placed air holes that increase airflow while preventing moisture from splashing into the open air. Finally, the quick-drying material is also antibacterial, allowing you to drink water while running without having to pull down the cover.

Other highlights include:

  • Quick-drying, washable fabric that cools the air flowing into the mouth, improving breathability and comfort

  • Adjustable cords to provide a personalized fit for each user

  • Manufactured with 31% recycled materials in their quest to be more sustainable

While the mask allows for breathability, ASICS warns that it’s not a medical device and recommend that healthcare professionals not use this product in a healthcare/clinical environment. A cover will not protect you from getting the virus, although the CDC recommends that coverings help prevent diseases from spreading if you’re in a public space.

“CDC is additionally advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.”

Priced at $40 each, the ASICS Runners Face Cover will be available for purchase in mid-September.
