Award-winning distillery relocates to Greater Manchester town with new bar and gin academy

The makers of an award-winning spirit have opened a new distillery and bar in Greater Manchester featuring its own gin academy.

The Defiance Distillery has opened its doors in Spotland Bridge Mill in Rochdale after relocating from its base at Oldham’s Woodend Mill, which was used by the spirits maker for seven years since its inception in 2017.

The new home for where its range of premium spirits, including gin, vodka, rum and liqueurs, are made, the distillery and bar will serve up its full selection of products alongside cocktails, wines, beers and meze food boards.

An on-site gin academy will provide an added immersive experience for those looking for something different, where people can learn about the spirit-making process before creating their own bottle of gin.

Owner Paul Sheerin, who has spent the last ten years distilling spirits, said moving the Defiance base to the renovated textile mill in Rochdale - which opened over the weekend - was made because the town was where he first started his career in the spirits industry.

Alongside Defiance, he has also distilled for other brands and has also run a number of delicatessens, including Heroes Fine Foods, which was based in Norden.

"I am thrilled to bring Defiance Spirits to Rochdale, where it all began for me," explained Paul. "Rochdale is undergoing an exciting period of revitalization, and I am proud to be a part of that journey.

“By relocating our distillery here, we aim to not only create exceptional spirits but also to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the local community by opening a contemporary bar and gin academy.”

Four years ago, Defiance Gin was voted the best in the world at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition after beating out tough competition from more than 3,000 other entries. Having won double gold in the Best In Show award, it was the first time a British product had won the title since 2006.

Mark Robinson, Rochdale Council’s Director of Economy and Place, added of the brand’s new distillery: “The growth in independent hospitality businesses offering that something a little bit different is what makes Rochdale a great place to live, work and play.

“With its gin academy, innovative events open to the public and award winning products, the passion that Paul and his team are bringing to the town is a fantastic addition to the hospitality sector in Rochdale.”
